Strength Training

Why is Strength Training right for you?

At GS Fitness we specialise in strength training, We use a wide variety of free weight and resistance equipment and a wide variety of exercises to improve your strength and fitness. Your personal trainer will design a progresive personal training plan that is built around your personal goals. Strength training truly is for everyone, daily activities are easier when you are stronger and more flexible.

Strength Training Benefits

  • Strength training or resistance training involves the performance of physical exercises which are designed to improve strength and endurance. It is often associated with the use of weights. It can also incorporate a variety of training techniques such as weight training calisthenics , isometrics, and plyometrics.
  • Improves your ability to do everyday activities: The stronger your muscles, the easier it is  to do everyday tasks, like carrying the shopping, lifting your child or gardening.
  • Improves your balance and stability: The stronger and more resilient your muscles, the sturdier your balance. This will help keep you safe in your daily activities and decreases the risk of falls or accidents.
  •  Builds muscle strength: Adults lose between five and seven pounds of muscle every decade after age 40. Strength training will help prevent this muscle loss and rebuild what you may have lost. Regular strength or resistance training is good for people of all ages and fitness levels to help prevent the natural loss of lean muscle mass that comes with aging (the medical term for this loss is sarcopenia).
  •  Decreases your risk of osteoporosis: Inactivity and aging can lead to a decrease in bone density, leading to brittleness. Studies have shown that consistent strength training can increase bone density, prevent, and may reverse osteoporosis.
  • Reduces blood pressure:  Strength training can be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure by strengthening the heart, allowing it to beat more efficiently.
  • Increases calorie burn: Strength training can help you to take control of your weight and even lose weight. Muscle weighs more than fat. But muscle increases your metabolism, and a higher metabolism helps you burn more calories.
  • Reduces low back pain: Research has shown that strength training can increase low back strength and alleviate low back pain. By strengthening the muscles that have become inactive and stretching the muscles that are overactive from long periods of sitting at a desk your posture will help solve your lower back issues.
  • Strength Training for runners can be particularly beneficial, helping to reduce injury, and pain when running.

Pre and Post Natal Exercise

Strength training isn't just for professional athletes and competitive bodybuilders – mums-to-be can reap its benefits too. But like other good forms of exercise during pregnancy it’s important that you know how to do it safely.

At GS Fitness our qualified Personal Trainer will design a personalised program that will develop as your pregnancy progresses. Your Personal Trainer is Level 3 Pre and Post Natal Exercise qualified, and a women’s exercise specialist.

Pre and Post-Natal strength-training is a great way to strengthen your abdominal and back muscles, increase your stamina for labor and delivery, and help prevent post-natal conditions such as diastasis recti and weak pelvic floor.

Your PT will ensure that your program follows correct strength training guidance for pregnant women. As your body changes through each trimester, so will your strength training routine.

The benefits of exercise for pregnant women include:

  • Strengthening your abdominal and back muscles, helping prevent the lower back pain that's common during pregnancy.

  • Building stamina,  beneficial during labor and delivery.

  • Keeping pregnancy weight gain within a healthy range for your body.

  • Lowering the risk of preeclampsia.

  • Lowering the risk of Diastasis Recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) and strengthening your pelvic floor.

  • Improving your mood and self esteem, potentially helping to  manage changes in mood and pregnancy stress.

  • Lowering the risk  of gestational diabetes. (One study has suggested that strength training can reduce the need for insulin therapy).

  • Shorter labor and lowering the chance of a c-section delivery, and helping post-natal recovery.

You may not be the only one seeing benefits: Research shows that strength training may help your baby’s foetal development. One long-term study showed that children born to women who lifted weights three to five times per week during pregnancy had more lean body mass and were longer than children born to women who didn’t lift weights.

Before starting a strength training program with GS Fitness we recommend that you discuss this with your GP or healthcare professional. Once you have been cleared to commence training your PT will invite you to a consultation at  our studio in Aylesbury to discuss your personal requirements. This will include assessing your posture and mobility so that your strength training program is as effective as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Gareth@gs-fitness.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

A normal session will last between 45 and 50 minutes. This will include a functional warm up, your strength training program and  some stretching.

No matter what your sex, age or fitness level literally everyone can benefit from a personal trainer.

Whether you are a complete beginner looking to learn how to weight train safely, a regular exerciser needing professional advice to take their training to the next level, or someone who simply would like to improve their balance.

This really depends on your goals, your own motivation levels, other commitments and your budget. As part of your initial free consultation we will talk through and agree a number of sessions per week which is realistic and achievable.

You will need to do more exercise in addition to seeing your Personal Trainer. One session a week without doing any extra work yourself will get minimal results. If you want big results then you have to put in the work yourself, however I am on hand to give advice for the best way to achieve the results. Additional training Programs to follow in a gym are designed free of charge. and regular attendance at my bootcamps will get you the results you want.

The only guarantee you have is the amount of commitment you give yourself. You should look on a Personal Trainer as a tool shop and you as the builder. I will give you the tools and then it's up to you to do the job. I am here to give you advice, training, knowledge, motivation and programs to help you reach your goals. You need to be motivated, committed and willing to follow the advice given.

It depends on your priorities and how much you want to reach your goals. Lots of people wouldn't think twice about spending way more money on a night out to then feel rough the next day! Look on each PT session as an investment in your future health and fitness.

The consultation will last around 30 minutes. You get the opportunity to discuss your goals, your current and previous fitness levels, any previous or on-going health issues, your lifestyle, nutrition and to ask any further questions.

If you really dislike an exercise your personal trainer will find an alternative. But remember that some of the exercises you are given to do will be difficult and challenging, this is not a reason to stop doing them.

Your Personal trainer will never shout at you. We have a passive approach to personal training, once you have been given an exercise to perform we expect you to perform it to the best of your ability. You will be encouraged to give 100%.

Personal training sessions that are not rescheduled or cancelled 24 hours in advance will result in forfeiture of the session and a loss of the financial investment at the rate of one session.

Clients arriving late will receive the remaining scheduled session time, unless other arrangements have been previously made with the trainer.

The expiration policy requires completion of all personal training sessions within 120 days from the date of the first session of payment. Personal training sessions are void after this time period No refunds will be issued for any reason, including but not limited to relocation, illness and unused sessions.
